GFWC Miami Springs Woman’s Club Hosts Domestic & Sexual Violence Awareness & Prevention Program

On Monday, November 18, 2024, the GFWC Miami Springs Woman’s Club opened its doors to the community in a united effort to shed light on the pressing issues of domestic and sexual violence. Chaired by the dedicated Lynda Randolph, this event was part of the GFWC Signature Program focused on Domestic & Sexual Violence Awareness & Prevention. The evening was marked by valuable insights, moving stories, and, most importantly, a call to action for all who attended.

Shining a Light on Domestic & Sexual Violence in the U.S.

Before diving into the highlights of the event, it’s important to understand the scope of domestic and sexual violence nationwide. Though many Americans may believe these issues only affect certain segments of society, the sobering reality is:

  • Domestic Violence:According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), one in four women and one in nine men in the U.S. experience severe intimate partner physical violence. It’s a crime that often thrives in silence, making awareness campaigns and community education crucial.

  • Sexual Violence:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nearly one in five women in the U.S. has experienced completed or attempted rape during her lifetime. For men, it’s about one in 38. These numbers underscore the importance of accessible support systems, comprehensive care, and education around consent and prevention.

The statistics are startling, but they also fuel hope when communities come together to support victims, advocate for change, and work toward prevention.

Keynote Speakers: Advocates from the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center

We were honored to host two remarkable keynote speakers, Franchine Peters and Louisenie Remy from the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. They gave an eye-opening presentation on the center’s vital services and the critical support they offer survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

About the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center

Founded in honor of Roxcy Bolton, a pioneering feminist and champion for women’s rights in South Florida, the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center is a beacon of hope for survivors of sexual violence. Key services include:

  • 24/7 Crisis Intervention: Trained professionals stand ready at all hours to provide immediate medical care, crisis counseling, and emotional support.

  • Trauma-Informed Medical Examinations: Caring professionals ensure survivors receive compassionate treatment while collecting crucial evidence.

  • Counseling & Therapy: Survivors can access ongoing individual, group, and family therapy for emotional healing and mental well-being.

  • Legal & Advocacy Services: Advocates guide survivors through reporting options, legal processes, and resources for safety planning.

  • Community Education & Training: The center conducts workshops and outreach to inform the public about sexual violence prevention and to dismantle the stigma surrounding survivors.

Ms. Peters and Ms. Remy emphasized the importance of raising awareness, offering survivor-centered care, and ensuring that victims of sexual assault have the resources they need for healing and justice.

Law Enforcement Perspective: Officer Capote of the Miami Springs Police Department

A crucial pillar in the fight against domestic and sexual violence is the role of law enforcement. Officer Capote from the Miami Springs Police Department took the stage to share how our local police department addresses these sensitive cases:

  • Immediate Response & Protection: The priority is to ensure the victim’s safety, respond quickly to calls, and de-escalate dangerous situations.

  • Thorough Investigations: Trained officers handle each domestic or sexual violence report with care and confidentiality. Gathering evidence and witness statements promptly helps build stronger cases.

  • Collaboration with Local Organizations: The police department often partners with shelters, and advocacy groups, ensuring victims receive holistic support.

  • Victim Advocacy: Officers encourage community members to speak up for victims, report signs of abuse, and offer resources when it’s safe to do so. Education on bystander intervention is a powerful tool in preventing continued abuse.

Officer Capote’s message was clear: open communication and community cooperation are essential to protect victims, stop abuse, and hold perpetrators accountable.

Community Support and Generosity

A heartfelt highlight of the evening was the outpouring of kindness from GFWC Miami Springs Woman’s Club members and the local community. Attendees donated much-needed personal hygiene products for survivors currently receiving care at the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center. These items, often taken for granted in daily life, are essential for helping survivors restore a sense of dignity and normalcy after experiencing trauma.
