From Roots to Revival: A Garden Club Legacy Reborn

Thanks to the dedication of our club historian, Fabian Pérez-Crespo, we uncovered a true treasure, an article from the Miami Herald dated Wednesday, May 1, 1946. What it revealed was more than history… it was the beginning of a legacy.

At just seven years old, the Miami Springs Woman’s Club was already described as “a potent force in its community,” 100 members strong and actively supporting initiatives like the city’s first library and the Springs Teen-Agers group. That same year, with a vision to focus on the “beautification of Miami Springs,” the Woman’s Club took a pivotal step, organizing the Miami Springs Garden Club.

Led by Woman's Club member Mrs. H. G. Horne, the Garden Club was created to carry forward beautification efforts that had been delayed during the war years.

By 1950, the Garden Club was flourishing. Under the leadership of Mrs. Truman Gile, members transformed public spaces, planting ixoras, crotons, petunias, and poinsettias along Poinciana Avenue, enhancing a traffic island with color and life, and even installing a flagstone walkway with holiday lights, and wait for it...we had a Fern Garden Circle Group. And in 1959, the Garden Club proved just how powerful a group of dedicated women could be. Faced with the removal of Australian pines along the Miami Springs Junior High School, the club worked with residents, experts, and city leaders to find a solution. Their efforts led to the planting of 50 new trees, balancing safety, cost, and beauty, earning them the Miami News Community Service Certificate for their role in solving a community-wide issue. "This is the second News certificate this club has received within the year. The first one was for the establishment of a garden book shelf in the Miami Springs Library."

A Legacy Reborn — 2026

In celebration of our Centennial, the Miami Springs Woman’s Club has proudly brought the Garden Club back to life, once again led by members of the Woman’s Club.

Today, the Garden Club is co-chaired by Judy Michelson, Katie Ortiz, Natalie Plasencia-Calvo, and me, Milly Perez-Crespo. The four of us began meeting in October 2025, nurturing the foundation for the revival of a legacy first planted in 1946, shaping its mission, structure, and vision for today’s community. By January, we opened our doors, and what began decades ago has found new life, growing into a vibrant and welcoming group of 40 members and counting.

Our mission remains true to what it was nearly 80 years ago: the beautification of Miami Springs. But today, we carry that mission forward with even greater understanding. We know the importance of creating and protecting habitats, embracing Florida-friendly gardening, and using education as a tool to inspire and empower.

More than anything, we are building a space that is welcoming, safe, and fun, a place for garden enthusiasts of all levels to learn, share, and grow together.

As someone new to gardening myself, I look forward to growing alongside this club, to one day look back and feel proud of the spaces we created, together. I think we are fortunate to live in a city that not only encourages this kind of community involvement, but truly empowers it.
