On Sunday, November 10, 2024, two sister GFWC Women’s Clubs came together for an inspiring act of kindness and community service. The GFWC Miami Springs Woman’s Club partnered with the Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Village to support their Black Doll Initiative, creating a day filled with generosity, gratitude, and meaningful connections.
This initiative began with a heartfelt mission: to collect black dolls and books for children in the Historic Overtown community. The Miami Springs Woman’s Club spearheaded a collection effort, led by club member Joy Noonan.
Together, our membership donated over 60 dolls, plus books, a testament to the power of collective action and the generosity of our membership. The event culminated with the delivery of the donations to the Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Village, located at the historic Black Police Precinct & Courthouse Museum at 480 NW 11th Street in Miami.
The second we met President Lavette Moore, we experienced firsthand the power of sisterhood, coming together for a beautiful mission. It was emotional, and we felt the impact of our efforts.
Lavette organized a tour of the Historic Black Police Precinct & Courthouse Museum by Officer Ealey, which we highly recommend.
A young girl visiting the museum that day was able to pick out a doll, a moment that beautifully underscored the significance of the initiative. It was a touching reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Lavette Moore, President of the Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Village, expressed her gratitude in a letter:
“Your generosity, kindness, and commitment to this cause have made a lasting impression on our community, and we are truly grateful for all you have done.”
The collected dolls and books will soon find their way into the hands of local Historic Overtown children, with the distribution date to be announced at their yearly Holiday event. Each gift will bring joy and encouragement to young hearts, reinforcing the shared mission of both clubs to uplift and support our communities.
When clubwomen work together, truly beautiful things happen.
The partnership between the GFWC Miami Springs Woman’s Club and the Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Village is a shining example of what can be achieved when women unite for a common cause. Through our collective efforts, we have provided tangible gifts and shared hope, joy, and a sense of belonging with the Overtown community.
As we look forward to the upcoming distribution event, let us celebrate the spirit of service and sisterhood that made this collaboration possible. Together, we can continue to create lasting change and leave a positive mark in our communities.
Thank you President Lavette Moore, and your mom for the warmest of welcomes!
